About the Stage Door Series

The Stage Door Series exists to expand the reach of Gamut Theatre Group in its mission to preserve and perform classic stories. The leadership of the Series comes from an ensemble of dedicated theatrical practitioners from the community.  Our goal is to present classical material in engaging and educational workshop productions focused on streamlining the production experience to highlight the essential elements of theatre: the text, the story, the action, and the actors.  Because of this, our shows are affordable and accessible evenings for the audience, defined by our motto “Come as you are, pay what you will.” Revenues from Stage Door Series productions support Gamut Theatre Group’s numerous other theatrical and educational offerings.  Additionally, our streamlined approach allows us to operate as an effective branch of outreach for Gamut Theatre Group through exploring alternative performance venues, engaging the crowds in discussion, and reaching diverse new audiences.

Current Season

The Girlhood of Shakespeare’s Heroines

by Don Nigro

September 19, 20, 26 & 27

7:30 p.m.

Gamut Classic Theatre

A selection of Shakespeare’s women and the actresses who portray them look back through their memories in this emotionally charged evening of contemporary theatre. Through the monologues we discover surprising perspectives on Shakespeare’s characters and plays. These ladies are smart, funny, sensual, truthful, loving, and irreverent.

Like the five acts in a Shakespeare play, Don Nigro brings us five interconnected plays, each one mirroring and echoing themes from the others. Ophelia, in the afterlife, sifts through remembrances trying to reconcile the terrible and beautiful events of her life. Zoe reflects back on the people she met during a Shakespeare workshop that changed her life. Bonnie, an actor who has worked on Shakespeare plays all her life, finally gets to play her dream role of Lady Macbeth. Mariana, talks about desire and laments that she is always waiting for the men in her life. Miranda tries to unravel the nature of art, procreation, and theatre.

A Staged Reading

January 16-24

Auditions: November 15 at 2:30 p.m.

“I do not believe that the kind of society I describe necessarily will arrive, but I believe that something resembling it could arrive. The moral to be drawn from the dangerous nightmare situation is a simple one: Don’t let it happen. It depends on you.” – George Orwell

Orwell powerfully depicts the horrors of man’s fate in a society where Big Brother is always watching you. Enjoy this dramatized classic dystopian tale brought alive on stage through creative images, movement, and staged reading.
