Gamut Theatre Group...
is the combined company of Popcorn Hat Players Children's Theatre and Harrisburg Shakespeare Festival. We are a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, and our mission is to tell classic stories in new and exciting ways for the entertainment and enlightenment of children and adults alike. In 2006, Gamut presented 304 performances and workshops and taught 16 different classes to reach over 32,000 people. Gamut also hosts and participates in numerous community outreach and educational programs throughout the year including KIDSFEST and Free Shakespeare in the Park. We have been recognized by the press and the public for the quality of our productions, the breadth of our programs, our reach into all segments of the community, and our ability to keep classic stories relevant and alive.
Gamut Classic Theatre...
is located on the third floor of Strawberry Square in downtown Harrisburg. This innovative theatre space seats 100 patrons on three sides of the performance stage, bringing the action and drama close to the audience and creating an intimate viewing experience. With the distinctive three levels of scaffolding that line its walls, The Gamut is one of the most unique performance facilities in the area and has often been compared to an off-Broadway space. Over 10,000 people come to the Gamut each year.Popcorn Hat Players Children's Theatre (PHP)...
has been entertaining children and their families since 1993, bringing fairy tales, folk tales and fables to new audiences every year. Using creative comedy and improvisation, the Players write adaptations and breathe new life into unforgettable stories. Over 116,000 children and adults have attended our maintstage productions, and we have reached over 400,000 people through our touring and education programs. In 2006, PHP presented 8 mainstage productions to 9,396 patrons at Gamut Classic Theatre, and took 4 productions "on the road" to 18,000 people. Our highly popular New Year's Eve Party for Children sells out Whitaker Center each year; and our theatre school classes, workshops and residencies reach over 1500 students annually. PHP was the only arts group named in the Top Ten Most Innovative Non-Profits in Central Pennsylvania, as determined by the Central PA Business Journal. Popcorn Hat Players is consistently named "Simply the Best" Children's Entertainment as determined by the readers of Harrisburg Magazine.
Harrisburg Shakespeare Festival (HSF)...
HSF is now in its sixteenth year of providing a unique and widely praised cultural resource to all of the Central Pennsylvania community. HSF has been recognized by the press and the public for the quality of its productions, the breadth of its programs, its reach into all segments of the community, and its ability to keep classic stories relevant and alive. Over 48,000 people have attended HSF productions, and our offerings and audience are continuing to grow.
We continue to present Free Shakespeare in the Park each summer, providing critically acclaimed free performances to the entire Harrisburg and Central PA community – over 2,500 people attended the 2008 production of Cymbeline .
In 2008, we presented 16 matinee shows, in-house and on tour, attended by over 3,000 students from 22 Central PA schools. HSF presents Shakespeare camps, classes, workshops and residencies throughout the year, the popular "Bard Senseless" 30-minute spoofs, and Shakespeare-based continuing legal education programs with the Dauphin County Bar Association. HSF is a roster artist through the PA Council on the Arts and is approved as an Educational Improvement Organization as recognized by the PA Department of Community and Economic Development’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit program.
HSF is nationally recognized as well: Melissa Nicholson, Executive Director, has served a two-year term as an officer of the Shakespeare Theatre Association of America, the preeminent Shakespeare theatre organization in North America.
